Greenpoint Railroad With Stone Mantel, Built-ins, Black and White Tile Asks $2,600 a Month
The railroad-style one-bedroom is narrow but has high ceilings, four rooms, wood floors and other original details.
This quirky one-bedroom seems to be a quite early apartment, perhaps dating from the 1880s or so, if the Neo-Grec style stone mantel is anything to go by. It’s on the first floor of 193 Java Street in Greenpoint.
The six-unit, three-story walkup is covered in siding, but the historic tax photo shows the wood-frame was once adorned with straps, brackets and pediments blending the Neo-Grec, Queen Anne and Italianate styles.
Inside, the railroad apartment is narrow but has high ceilings, four rooms, wood floors and other original details. There are also built-ins and a bathroom with black and white tile.
A makeover in the mid 20th century added scalloped trim and sliding glass doors to the dish cupboard in the kitchen. Big enough for a table, the room has a tin ceiling and bead board wainscot. The kitchen fireplace, built to house a coal or wood burning range, holds the modern gas stove.

The kitchen is in the rear overlooking the backyard; at the other end of the unit is the parlor with the marble mantel, in use as the bedroom. Likely the two interior rooms were once intended as bedrooms, and one of them, set up as a living room, has a built-in wardrobe.
The other now serves as the apartment’s entry and could work as a dining room, library or office. Alternatively, the apartment could also be configured as a two-bedroom for a family.
In addition to the wardrobe, there may be one or two other cupboards, the video shows, but it’s not clear. Off the kitchen, the petite bathroom with tile-in tub has a modern pedestal sink and toilet with vintage black and white tile.
Listed by David Gaidowski of Native Real Estate, the apartment is asking $2,600 a month. Worth it?
