House of the Day: Landmarked Crown Heights House With Details, Triple Parlor

This landmarked Queen Anne house at 1283 Bergen Street in the Crown Heights North Historic District has all the details you could want. Designed by architect firm Baker & Lincoln and built circa 1890, it is brimming with original mantels, woodwork, shutters, moldings and inlaid parquet floors.

It all looks to be in pretty good shape, too. Outside, the well-preserved exterior has a lot of curb appeal, with a curved limestone and brick front, arched windows and original ironwork, all adding up to a charming English cottage look. It is part of a row of five, all slightly different.

The house is legally a two-family, and was never an SRO, public documents reveal, although it currently has five kitchens. A potential buyer might want to rejigger the layout and do a little cosmetic work — like, for example, removing any and all plush crimson carpeting.

The top two floors are set up rooming-house style with two studio units and a shared bath on each floor. The parlor floor, set up as a triple parlor with a sliver of a kitchen, is duplexed with a finished basement, which has a single bedroom and a “utility room.”

Give it a little attention and put a proper kitchen in the rear and you’d have quite a fine living space. (The seller can also remove excess kitchens if the buyer desires, the listing agent, Chaya Zarchi of B.H. Tal, told Brownstoner.)

Interestingly, according to public records, the place was just bought in July, for $1,050,000, well below the current ask of $1,599,000. [Update: The agent just let us know the price has been cut to 1,549,000.]
