Flatbush Colonial Revival-Style Row House Brimming With Vintage Charm Asks $1.195 Million
There’s no denying the curb appeal or the interior charm of this early 20th century Colonial Revival-style row house in Flatbush.
There’s no denying the curb appeal or the interior charm of this Colonial Revival-style row house in Flatbush. In addition to the plentiful original woodwork on the interior there is a renovated vintage-style kitchen with a distinct style statement. The appeal of the single-family is no doubt enhanced by its photogenic interiors, filled with vintage furniture, artwork and pottery.
Set back from the street, 2777 Bedford Avenue is in a row of 11 early 20th century row houses, with a matching row across the street. At first glance, with their two-story brick exteriors, keystone lintels, bay windows and front doors with fanlights, they have all the hallmarks of a Slee & Bryson design, well known purveyors of the Colonial Revival in Brooklyn. Records filed in 1914 show the two rows of houses were actually the work of the Cohn Brothers on behalf of the Renslaw Realty Company. The Cohn Brothers pop up more frequently as the architects behind numerous 1920s and 1930s Brooklyn apartment buildings.
The 18-foot-wide row house is compact but has a practical layout. A spacious living room is set into the front bay with an adjacent dining room and a kitchen at the rear of the first floor. Upstairs are three bedrooms and the only full bath in the house. A half bath and laundry are in the basement.

Parquet floors with inlaid borders are found in most of the main rooms. The living room is particularly rich with woodwork, including trim, a wood ceiling in the bay window, an original side stair with newel post and a paneled wall incorporating a closet. The coffered ceiling of the dining room is painted white and there is a stained glass window.
In the kitchen, rays of chartreuse paint angle across lower cabinets, repeating the color of the solid upper cabinets and tying in with the owner’s collection of vintage kitchen ware. The handmade Moroccan tile backsplash is a bit more subdued but complimentary, and the Spanish tile floor has a border of the same color.
The tinted concrete counter and matching cutting board pick up the terra-cotta hues of the floor. Glass-fronted cabinets in the soffit on one side and open cabinets on the opposite wall provide plenty of display space.
A door off the kitchen opens to stairs down to the basement. The latter is also accessible from an entrance at the front and from the rear yard.
Upstairs, the street-facing bedroom has three windows and two colorful accent walls. It boasts multiple closets, including a walk-in.
There is another walk-in closet off the hallway, next to the renovated bath. Both are well organized with built-ins, and one has a colorful patterned floor. (They could also easily provide room for a second full bathroom on this level.)
The bath has a classic black-and-white scheme with white tile walls, black border tiles and a Greek Key design rendered in black tiles on the floor. There is a soaking tub and a separate glass-doored shower.
In addition to the front garden, there is a paved patio in the rear, rimmed with planting beds filled with perennials and shrubs.
The house is located just a short walk from Brooklyn College and the closest subway stop is the Flatbush Avenue-Brooklyn College station with the 2 and 5 trains.
The house last sold in 2009, when it fetched $481,000. Now listed by Laura Rozos of Compass, it is asking $1.195 million. What do you think of it?
Editor’s note: Wow, that was fast. After only four days on the market, this house is already in contract. Also, while it is on the boundary of South Midwood, it is located in Flatbush, not Midwood nor South Midwood. We have updated the story.
