A Prospect Heights one-bedroom carved out of a one-time French flat isn’t oversize, but high ceilings and banks of windows give it an airy aspect. It’s on the top floor of 118 Underhill Avenue, a four-story Renaissance Revival corner apartment building in the historic district.

Built circa 1892 by prolific builder William H. Reynolds in pale golden brick, the bow-fronted walkup combines a prominent cornice with cast-stone details, including a classically-inspired entrance portico flanked by columns. Likely originally comprising four two-bedroom flats, the property now has eight units.

This one is in the front, with an open main area that includes the building’s rounded corner bay, moldings, paneling, and a diagonal wood floor with inlaid borders. There is plenty of room for dining and lounging, and the space is ringed by five tall windows.

A pass-through to the modern kitchen includes a counter for bar stools, and an arched doorway leads to the hall.

In the kitchen is pale wood and glass-fronted cabinetry, a white subway tile backsplash, wood floor, and marble-patterned brown and cream stone counters. Appliances include an electric stove, microwave, and dishwasher.

The inlaid floors continue into the bedroom, where there is a picture rail and other moldings, a window, and closet. The updated bathroom is lined with large squares of stone that resembles travertine and square mosaic floor tile.

Listed by Jonathan McLaren of Prospect Heights Realty, the apartment is priced at $3,750. What do you think?
