This Prospect Lefferts Gardens one-bedroom doesn’t come with a lot of bells and whistles, but it does have some Deco character, an efficient layout and freshly skim coated walls. For those worried about noisy upstairs neighbors, it also has the benefit of a top floor location at 125 Hawthorne Street, an elevator building.

An early brochure shows the six-story brick building was dubbed Bedford Hall and designed by Kavy & Kavovitt, who were busy with apartment buildings across Brooklyn and Queens during this era. Completed in 1940, the building shares the restrained Colonial Revival style of its neighbor, also designed by the firm, with details such as quoining, keystoned lintels and an arched entry. The latter is missing its original fanlight and has a modern canopy above, but is still framed by pilasters.

The same brochure shows the floor plan for this unit hasn’t changed, and it includes a generous foyer with a walk-in closet that opens to a living room with two exposures. There is the typical shelf niche found in apartment foyers of this era along with arched doorways and wood floors.

There’s room for some upgrades to the galley kitchen; as the listing notes, it has been “left to your imagination.” A few judicious updates such as new Marmoleum flooring and a period-style fridge could bring out the vintage charm of the kitchen, which has a window, original built-in and space for a small table.

Across the foyer is the large bedroom with two exposures and two closets. The fourth closet in the apartment is across from the bath, which has white Deco tile walls with black border tiles and accessories and a black and white patterned floor. Replacing the standard builder-grade vanity and adding a larger medicine cabinet or mirror might freshen the space.

The building has a live-in super, laundry and a bike room. Maintenance for the unit is $632 a month.

Last on the market in 2004, this apartment sold then for $83,634. Now priced at $475,000, it is listed by Hakim Edwards of Compass. Worth the ask?
