Rentals of the Day: 165 West 9th Street
How much are renters willing to shell out to be a stone’s throw from the BQE? Plenty, apparently. Nine units in a new building at 165 West 9th Street, on the Carroll Gardens-Red Hook border, are up for grabs for between $2,400 (1-bedroom, 1-bath) and $5,000 (2-bedroom penthouse duplex). Nine units in a new building at 165 West 9th Street, on the Carroll Gardens-Red Hook border, are up for grabs for between $2,400 (1-bedroom, 1-bath) and $5,000 (2-bedroom penthouse duplex). A broker at Awaye Realty, which is marketing the apartments, says there’s been constant interest in the units, though lease signings are pending a c-of-o (move-ins are expected by October). The listings tout floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors, and top-of-the-line appliances. While the constant highway din seems like a big minus to us, we can see how the units might be attractive in an area where there’s not much new rental construction to speak of. Anyone toured these in the flesh?

You don’t walk through the projects to get to this building from the subway. It’sbetween Court and Hamilton, 2 blocks from the Smith & 9th St. stop. One block from 505 Court. I mean “Court Street Lofts.” The projects are on the otherside of Hamilton.
And if you live in Red Hook, you walk past this building on the way home from the train. Through the projects. Not the nicest area for the rents.
Awaye (pronounced A-way) has also been advertising them as Historic Carroll Gardens which I can’t help but laugh hysterically at. Since when is West 9th street historic? I also coundn’t fathom paying those prices for a rental on such a high traffic street, next to a highway and the entrance to the Battery Tunnel no less.
This building has been vacant for about 5 years. It was originally built as “luxury” condos. Many stop orders on construction later, the building sat uncompleted. Then it was for sale. Then suddenly Awaye Realty was renting the apartments. They have been for rent for MONTHS AND MONTHS. If you look at the pictures on the Awaye site, you will notice the same picture represents MANY apartments, despite differences in description. And “state of the art” kitchen? Ha ha ha – Lowes special is more like it. This building is a soon-to-be dump. Not worth the money.

Awaye ads are such a riot! “Nestled in Carroll Gardens”, “Prime Carroll Gardens”, “With an extravagant granite entranceway, 165 West 9th Street is the most striking building in this youthful and trend-setting community.” Cough Cough…it’s the fumes from the trucks getting to me…
I walked past this block today to get to the post office in Red Hook. Not attractive because it is right near Hamilton, the BQE, the tunnel, etc. Plus, it is Awaye realty, which does not bode well. And it looks like the entire building is for sale (if this is current): http://www.peterashe.com/commercial/165W9/
I have actually seen those apts although at the time they werent ready for movin. Some of the apts look over the BQE but they were extremely quite inside. All of them had different layouts and outdoor space and they were really nice. I would have taken one but the whole c-of-o thing made it so they couldnt promise a day for sure.

How do you pronounce that realty’s name?
