51 Jay Street: A Building and a Neighborhood Transformed
Residents of Dumbo’s 51 Jay Street will enjoy living in one of the most exciting, constantly changing neighborhoods in New York City.
Brooklyn is changing before our eyes, and few neighborhoods are changing as fast as Dumbo. Over the past three decades or so Dumbo has been transformed from an industrial relic to a chic urban oasis. 51 Jay Street is currently 70 percent sold and is now offering remaining two- to four-bedroom residences priced from $2 million. A luxury development under construction that had a previous life as a factory for printing on metal plates, 51 Jay Street is an iconic example of Dumbo’s transformation.
The architecture firm ODA has planned out modern living spaces with a discerning clientele in mind. High ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and generous open spaces combine Manhattan-style luxury with an authentic Brooklyn style, spelled out in the brick exterior, hardwood floors, and casement windows.
Residents of 51 Jay will have a front-row seat to the exciting changes that are happening in Dumbo.
Treasure seekers, for example, will be thrilled to know that Brooklyn Flea has returned to Dumbo for its Sunday session at Pearl Plaza. The Flea features 75 vendors, offering antiques and collectibles, vintage clothing, furniture, rugs and textiles, crafts… and, of course, delicious food.
Speaking of food, one of Dumbo’s most important transformations — from culinary desert to food destination — continues apace. Vinegar Hill House and Gran Eléctrica both get high marks from food critics. Or, if you’re in the mood for something more casual, the neighborhood’s thriving tech and creative industries have attracted an impressive selection of food trucks.
There are more changes on the way. New developments under construction are bringing in a wave of new dining options. Dumbo Heights is slated to include Dos Toros, Dig Inn and Untamed Sandwiches. Empire Stores will have its own outpost of Vinegar Hill House plus the London pizzeria Pizza East. And the new high-end food court coming to the nearby Brooklyn Navy Yard will feature a location of the famed smoked salmon and bagel purveyors Russ & Daughters.
Residents who prefer to use 51 Jay Street’s well-appointed oversized kitchens will be thrilled to learn that Wegmans — recently voted America’s favorite grocery store — will be coming to the Navy Yard as well. Though not as large as its suburban locations, this Wegmans will be bigger than the Whole Foods in Gowanus and the Fairway in Red Hook.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn Bridge Park continues its reimagining of the Brooklyn waterfront. This spring, the Community Dock at ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina will begin to offer free and low-cost boating opportunities that include kayaking, fishing and sailing programs.
Also, the park will partner with The Cliffs Climbing and Fitness to open DUMBO Boulders at Main Street, featuring climbing opportunities for all skill levels.
Pet owners will be pleased to learn that there are a number of dog runs in the park, including the nearby Main Street run.
Proximity to the park is a definite plus, joining a number of perks that are part of the building itself. Amenities at 51 Jay St include 24-hour concierge, fitness and yoga room, children’s playroom, resident’s lounge, bicycle and resident storage, pet washing/grooming station, and a landscaped central courtyard designed by Steven Yavanian Landscape Architecture.
