Downsizing is never easy — selling your home is stressful, and leaving your home can be a bittersweet loss.

To help smooth the transition, the trio at Compass’  Morris | Resnick team will be sponsoring a “Downsizers Panel Discussion” on Wednesday, November 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Park Slope at The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture.

Alyssa Morris and Maxine Resnick will talk about the buying/selling process, while third partner Neely Moore will discuss transitioning from your sold property into a temporary rental.

Attorney Lynn Scully will answer legal questions. Katie Hustead, owner of Paper Moon Moves, will talk about decluttering, and interior designer Parker Lutz will offer staging tips to prep for an open house.

These five tips can help in the transition:

downsizing your home

1. Get centered. When selling, go through each room in the house and think about the best times you had there — and then focus on the memories that you’re going to be building in your next home.

2. Expect fluctuations. Downsizing is about gaining financial freedom, but the housing market is like any other commodity — expect subtle shifts in the market to play out in a short amount of time, depending on what you are buying and selling.

3. Keep up (or not) with the Joneses. If you’re selling, there is no need to renovate, but you can’t ask the same price as your neighbor down the street who did renovate.

4. Do the staging thing. A fresh coat of white paint and flowers are an immediate fix, and can bring a dull space to life.

5. Timing. Keep in mind that selling your home is a longer process than renting one. As for renting, timing will vary depending on the type of building you choose to rent in. Condos, co-ops and rental buildings all have slightly different leasing approval processes.

The event takes place Wednesday, November 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture at 53 Prospect Park West in Park Slope. No RSVP required and light refreshments will be served.
