5 Tips to Enhance Your Living Space With Art and Shop The Other Art Fair
The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art will feature works from more than 120 independent artists — half of them from the New York area.
The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art returns to Brooklyn for its 12th edition from November 9 to 12. Held at ZeroSpace, the event will feature works from more than 120 independent artists — half of them from the New York area.
And it’s just not art for the walls. On site will be personalized haikus (opening night only!), live tattooing, DJ sets, a pet portraitist, video portrait sessions with Tamara Staples, and an exclusive exhibition of paintings by guest artist Danny Cole. There will also be interactive workshops, including Poster Making, Make a Mini Zine, and Print Postcards. Cocktails, wine, and beer will be served at the fair bar and there will be bites, and coffee by Maman.
Of course, the chief function of the fair is to connect independent artists with thousands of art buyers — many of whom are looking for ways to beautify their living space or stage their home for resale to increase its value.
Here are five tips to consider when looking to enhance your space with art, from Curation and Art Advisory Supervisor at Saatchi Art India Balyejusa.
Get in touch with your style
“Consider your own preferences before starting your art-buying journey. Whatever your personal preferences may be, focus on what you truly love. In the end, you should find art that genuinely resonates with you.”
Consider the architecture and style of your building
“The period in which the building was built could also inform your artwork selection. Similarly, if the building has any historical or cultural significance, you could select an artwork that reflects or celebrates the heritage.”
Select work by local artists
“A lot of local artists have a connection to the community and use their surroundings as inspiration and subject matter for the art.”
Mix and match traditional and modern styles
“Selecting contemporary or abstract artwork can add contrast against an older building’s traditional elements.”
Get talking with the artists!
“This allows you to have insight into their work, how it was made, and if it aligns with the story you would like to share in your space. The result is a closer relationship with the artwork you like, as well as stories to tell your friends and family once the piece is in your space.”
Of course, you can always work with an expert. Saatchi Art’s art advisors have decades of combined experience curating art collections for clients. They can work with you one on one to select artwork that highlights or complements the unique charm of your home.
Buy a Thursday ticket to attend “Opening Night with Brownstoner” — full disclosure, we are a media sponsor — and get early access to all artwork. Thursday tickets can book free return tickets for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
