Brownstoner Upstate: A Greene County Voyage
As we’ve said before, Greene County has such a “best of both worlds” situation. Over to the east, you’re in the Hudson Valley and quaint villages like Catskill and Coxsackie. As we’ve said before, Greene County has such a “best of both worlds” situation. Over to the east, you’re in the Hudson Valley and quaint villages like Catskill and Coxsackie. Over to the west, you’re squarely in Catskill Mountain Park. So we’re going on a road trip this week starting in the riverfront town of Coxsackie, then working our way west to Cairo, Jewett, and then Hunter. We never get tired of looking at properties in Greene County. You can still find a bargain or two, land is abundant and , overall, the taxes won’t blow your mind like they do in other neighboring counties (we’re looking at you, Ulster County).
This center hall Colonial in Coxsackie wasn’t built in the 18th or 19th century but rather 2004, as the listing specifies. Still, it’s pretty, bright, and offers plenty of space for a big family. Sits atop 34 acres right in the village, walking distance to amenities and the waterfront park. Beds: 4. Baths: 1.5. Square Feet: 4048. Lot Size: 34 acres. Est. Taxes: $10,922. Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hours, 25 minutes.

We admit we have a crush on this house’s sweet kitchen, and in terms of a stylish, cheerful upstate escape, this property would certainly fill the bill. Decently sized and located on nearly two acres just east of the Blackhead Mountain Lodge and Country Club and 30 minutes east of Hunter Mountain. Beds: 3. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 2071. Lot Size: 1.72 acres. Est. Taxes: $6736. Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hours, 19 minutes.

And now we’re over in the hamlet of Jewett just outside of Hunter village for our most expensive offering of the week. Nearly $900,000 seems like a lot for a one-bed, one-bath retreat, but the views are something else. It’s on four acres of land far off the road with plenty of privacy but only four miles separates this modern property from Hunter Mountain. The interior is simply stunning. Beds: 1. Baths: 1. Square Feet: 2700. Lot Size: 4 acres. Est. Taxes: $5020. Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hours, 29 minutes.

And finally, we conclude our tour in the village of Hunter with this classic Victorian on a quarter acre. Situated close to everything in the village including Hunter Mountain for skiing and Dolan’s Lake for swimming. Listing seems to indicate that it comes furnished. It’s well priced at less than $200,000, and the yearly taxes are under $4,000. Beds: 3. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 1818. Lot Size: .22 acres. Est. Taxes: $3789. Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hours, 29 minutes.
