Brownstoner Upstate: Fulfill an Upstate Fantasy in a Farmhouse

Few things spark our fancy like the thought of a rambling farmhouse upstate. Luckily, such properties abound in the Brownstoner Upstate real estate listings, too many to post all at once, in fact. So we took the liberty of paring down the list to four of our favorites, ranging in price from $450,000 to $299,000, located in Columbia and Ulster Counties. Now, we understand that some of the handier among us prefer the fantasy of fixing up and refurbishing a farm house in the country. The reality of a project like that, however, is far more laborious and time-consuming than some want (suggested reading: Country Matters by Michael Korda). For those who like their farmhouses turn-key, this one’s for you.

Stone Ridge feels like the country…well, because it is. But that doesn’t mean it’s remote. The bucolic hamlet with good sushi is only 10 minutes from the city of Kingston and 20 minutes from New Paltz. It’s also where this stunning Victorian farmhouse on 2 acres is located. Where the Stone Ridge farmhouse is fancy, this Saugerties stone and cedar shake farmhouse is more comfortable. Originally built in 1825, the house has been restored with plenty of modern touches. Not as much land as some of our other picks, but an acre of land is still plenty enough room. Includes landscaped yard, screened-in porch, and detached 2-car garage. Beds: 2. Baths: 1. If we read the listing right, this house was relocated to this location from elsewhere in the 1990s. That means old house (c.1780), newish foundation and basement. The interior looks like the cover of Country Living magazine in a white-washed walls, plank flooring, and exposed beams kind of way, and plenty of land here, nearly 7 acres’ worth. Backyard has an in-ground pool, and we spy a barn on the property. What would you do with it? Studio? Guest cottage? Both?
