Design enthusiasts eager to explore the Hudson Valley will find some interiors inspiration at the sixth annual Kingston Design Showhouse. Eleven designers tackled the rooms of an early 19th century home, transforming empty spaces into richly layered interiors with artful touches.
The fundraiser opened to the public last week and runs through October 27. Hosted by Kingston Design Connection, a network for area creatives founded by designer Maryline Damour of Damour Drake, this year’s showhouse marks the fifth for the organization. Previous versions have taken on a picturesque manse, a modest brick cottage, and a 20th century Queen Anne.
Participating designers this year include Casolare, Damour Drake, Krishna Fitzpatrick, Hendley & Co., KD Reid, NJA Interiors, Poppy Interiors, Studio Hinterland, Shana Luther Interiors, Alison Zavracky Design Studio, and Zimmer Gardens and and Mountain Meadow Gardens. While the interiors are now burnished with color and texture, the garden was not neglected. New planting beds curve gracefully in front of the house, and seating areas and sculptural pieces are dotted around the front and rear yards.
Visitors will need to venture outside of Kingston to Stone Ridge this year for the chosen dwelling. The Ulster County hamlet is located roughly 13 miles southwest of Kingston and has a substantial National Register historic district. The Main Street Historic District includes the chosen property at 3714 Main Street. The nomination gives an estimated circa 1840s construction date for the five-bay-wide center-hall house.
This year’s edition continues the organization’s focus on housing and affordability with a partnership with the Ulster County Habitat for Humanity. This spring a newly constructed Habitat home was used for a second annual Kingston Design Habitat House, focused on using goods from the Habitat ReStore and raising awareness and funds for Habitat home construction. The two organizations also launched a home improvement series, with speakers covering topics from gardening to heating and cooling your home.
The house is open on weekends only so there are two more weekends to visit, October 19 and 20 and 26 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Buying tickets, which are $38, in advance is recommended. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Kingston Design Showhouse event page online.
