345-adams-rendering-121010.jpgIn another big coup for Downtown Brooklyn (hello, Shake Shack), the popular (over 1,400 outlets around the country) soup-and-sandwich restaurant Panera will be setting up shop at 345 Adams Street, reports The Brooklyn Eagle; this is the first lease signed by Muss Development since it took over and began repositioning the first two floors of the city office building. While the move solidifies the trend of upscale chains putting down roots in the Fulton Mall area, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise: We had hints about this last year and even predicted the tenant would be a Panera as recently as August. Update: Crain’s also has a story up now along with a higher-res rendering. Check it out here.

  1. Yeah, I gotta disagree with the whole “Panera is total crap” thing. It’s a decent soup-and-sandwich place and it will do well in that spot. That cluster of blocks mostly contains office buildings and day-time workers: their target crowd. Closest of the new residential towers is Brooklyner. Residents there need some new restaurants along Wiloughby.

  2. I live in one of the new residential buildings and I’m thrilled about Panera and Shake Shack… Would be nice to have a sit down restaurant though.

  3. This is totally off topic but Brooklyn is doomed when it gets a franchise of the place that sells food on a stick – like full meals – for people at the drive through.

I was looking up weird franchises once for some reason and found it. OK, I just looked it up; it’s called “Justix.” Google it and be horrified.

  4. “Panera will serve well the exact population it will be meant to serve at that location. It will be a huge success.”

kinda sucks though – all the retail that moves into DoBro caters to the people who work in the area. Meanwhile you have new residential towers full of people waiting for ANYTHING to open that they can walk to in less than 20 minutes.

  5. BK veteran, you’re right. I was imprecise. Panera will draw some customers closer to them; what I meant was that the distance it takes walking to go pick up something vs. the lines everywhere make it seem like there’s not enough.

  6. Landlords like national tenants that will pay the rent.

    And they should.

While a nice “mix” of tenants is always good, it is usually a distant second to financial viability.

Panera will serve well the exact population it will be meant to serve at that location. It will be a huge success.

  7. infinite, que? there are 75 food outlets in the area… best quick hit lunch area in BK. Perelandra has take out, as does five guys. carts on street, multi pizza, kosher take out
    WTF are you talking about?

  8. As someone who works in the area, the quick hit lunch options are not all that plentiful. Definitely need more. Panera will be a big hit.

    But I want a Pret-a-Manger!
