The Strong Place Church condo conversion in Cobble Hill is moving along…verrry slooowly. The 24-unit project’s been under way for a year and a half now, and the site looks more or less the same as it did in August. Judging from the big pit at the center of the building, the crew seems to be concentrating on foundation work (a reader writes in to say that they move a lot of dirt in and out). The conversion’s protracted construction schedule probably has a lot to with the developer’s pledge to be extremely preservation-conscious, though we’re wondering how it’s sitting with nearby residents. A person who lives across the street told us she’s lost track of how many complaints I’ve made. (DOB records, however, only show four complaints, all about after-hours activity.) The work seems pretty contained to us, though the brick that’s hauled into the street to mark off parking spots (see photo on jump) ain’t all that pretty. A construction guy we talked to last week said the development’s going to take at least another year and a half to finish.

  1. I doubt that the slow pace has anything to do with being preservation-conscious, since they gutted everything except for the exterior walls and aren’t up to any time-consuming detail work.

  2. Do you see how small the man working at the bottom of the screen is? Those ceiling heights are not low ceilinged, your frame of reference is.

  3. This is exactly as I predicted when told at the “open house” that construction would take “about a year and a half”. I immediately thought to myself, “Oh no, it’s gonna take three years!” (Btw, most of the complaints were during demo when they did work before 7 AM a few times and occasionally weekends. These days they stick to 7-6 ish.)
