The Gowanus Whole Foods plan seems to be alive and kicking, but it’s having a tough time passing muster with the DOB. On Wednesday the department rejected the grocer’s latest filing to proceed with construction. Although the rejection is undeniably a setback for WF (and it’s not the first time their plans have been given the thumbs-down), it seems to us like proof positive that the supermarket is going to keep pushing until it gets an OK to build. Agree it’s only a matter of time?

I second 10:54 PLG suggestion, the northern edge of PLG is zoned for these big box stores and community opposition would be pretty low.
The opening of Whole Foods will clean up the Gowanus and will attract more biz in the area. That’s a very positive move. Sometimes the ‘green’ conscious consumers get over zealous while lacking in information, they need reassurances like babies through educ promotions.
Of course it’s getting done, it has a physical lot that fits their needs 100% in terms of size and it’s in the best location in Brooklyn. Whole foods is a corporation that doesn’t make mistakes, they knew what they were getting into as far as clean up is concerned and the DOB.
why did DOB reject? anyone know?

I have heard from an insider that this thing is 100% getting done but just a matter of DoB approving things. Anyone saying this wont get built or any other nonsense has no idea what they are saying.

WF will make it happen. But I agree with 10:23, think of how costly it’s been for them. They can’t be happy about it.
If they DO change their mind about the location though, there are large commercially zoned properties on Empire Blvd near Prospect Park on the edge of PLG, with room enough for a parking lot and a big size store. And with no cleanup. Or Trader Joe’s would be great. I’m a fan of Trader Joe’s because it’s more affordable to a wider range of people, and yet still pleasing to those who want a gourmet market.
