A new coffee and sandwich shop is about to wash up near the banks of the Gowanus. The Crooked Tail Café, on Third Avenue and President Street (next to Canal Bar and across the street from G-town’s hotel row), is going to serve breakfast food, paninis, coffee and espresso drinks. The area needs a place like this, one Crooked Tail’s owners told us. It’s tough to even find a decent sandwich around here. They also said that they intend to serve high-quality food and coffee, but not at Starbucks prices. The business is opening in a storefront that used to house the Italian American Grocery, which was in operation for decades and closed a few months ago. Crooked Tail should be up and running by the end of February, and the owners hope to eventually have sidewalk tables and performances in the back room. GMAP
I live over in that area and frequent Canal Bar and Bella Maria. It is a fun part of town. You get to know the owners and has a great community feel. Looking forward to the new businesses, just not the increases in rent….
hmm, ive been thinking about running a small business on 3rd ave for a while. anyoneever been into canal bar? my problem is that i live on sackett over in CGardens so im just not very familiar with the gowanus
Yeah, my bad, that IS 4th ave. I was thinking the post was referring to the coffee shop going up there on 4th. That building had to be pumped out by the NYFD last flood on 4/15.
It is 4th Avenue, and I’m sure it was a MAJOR flood.

4:16 – I think that is 4th ave not 3rd. I have never seen flooding like that at the location where the sandwich shop is going to be.

This area of gowanus is so under the radar. I rented right across from here for 5 years and finally bought just a little down the road. It has fewer amenities than 2 avenues up and not the same architectual grandeur that everyone here seems to cherish above all else. But what it does have is very friendly people, a growing artist community, a diverse mix of the old-world and well heeled yups, and some great bars and restuarants.
This sandwich shop will be a much welcome addition to the neighborhood.
