The DOB permit for the job was issued in December, and work on the project only seriously got under way in mid-January. The rumor mill says this one’s going to be a budget chain with around 50 rooms, though that chit-chat hasn’t been substantiated. Further down the block, meanwhile, the DOB issued a permit for the demolition of the old warehouse at 551 President, one of two buildings on the street developer SAI Hospitality plans to knock down in order to put up a couple hotels. At 551 President, SAI said it wants to build a 120-room facility.

these guys are not the fools you think they are … zoning only permits hotels now … when it’s rezoned for residential they’ll go condo and be ‘first to market’
Red Hook didn’t crash, per se. It just changed direction from boho enclave to Elizabeth NJ wannabe.
A great friend from High School visited Brooklyn for work a few weekends ago while I was away. It was her first time to the borough and her work put her up at the current McSam in Gowanus (Park Slope as it was advertised). Needless to say when I spoke to her about her visit she had nothing to recommend. In fact, she hated Brooklyn.
What I’m getting at is Brooklyn will no bet getting many repeat customers, nor happy visitors if this is the caliber we see fit for our guests.

you underestimate the amount of tourists now coming over to brooklyn.
This is nuts. I give it 3 or 4 years before all these joints become homeless shelters. Still profitable for the owners I guess, but what a drag they’ll be on the community.
