PS 133, the 109 year old school at Butler and Fourth Avenue has been covered up and looks set for demolition. Brooklyn the Borough spoke with a nearby resident earlier this month who said, “The old building is shrouded and demolition was supposed to be starting at the same time as excavation, but I haven’t seen anything yet the interiors appear to be gutted.” It still looks like there still hasn’t been any significant headway. The excavation and demolition process is supposed to last six months and the new construction of the school has an estimated completion date of 2012.

  1. I think it is odd how the new school is to go up on the outside of where the old school currently stands. I feel like the architects could have created something unique by combining new construction with the old school. This isn’t exactly a one room school house, this is a good sized building. Even if they save the facade and cut away the rest, I think preserving a portion of the current school is worth considering.

What is it with New York and demolition? Everything in this city that is torn down is replaced by something less impressive than what originally stood.

  2. Let me get this straight. We teach the kiddies to recycle like it’s a religion; we compost our little conesful of coffee grounds; we obsess over “green building technologies” and buy twee gift items and home furnishings made of recycled everything; and then we send an entire functional, handsome school…TO THE LANDFILL???
