Dean Street, the new bar and restaurant moving into the Tavern on Dean spot at Underhill Avenue, has been in the works since at least October, when we first reported on it. I Love Franklin Avenue recently tipped us off on how much progress has been made, and we were able to stop in and talk to the owners to get the lowdown. Former Spotted Pig chef Nate Smith will be cooking up seasonal American food, with bar snacks, in-house charcuterie, and the like. Weekday mornings they will open the cafe portion of the space (off of Underhill) and serve Stumptown Coffee and baked goods. There will be brunch on weekends, and evenings the bar will be serving up some specials from Kelso of Brooklyn. You can read more at the Dean Street website, and check back here for a sneak peak of the space once construction wraps, which will be soon. Sweet! Update: Eater posted about this a few minutes ago as well.

  1. East New York is so right.

So very true about the atmosphere at Tavern on Dean. Nowhere comes close to how laid back, friendly, welcoming, and awesome that place was. I am desperate for a venue to fill the void that Tavern on Dean left but there is nowhere to both have a lovely and affordable meal or catch the game. Plan B has a great staff but the food is weak and the crowd is a bit meat-heady.

Dean Street sounds like another Vanderbilt and while I am sure the food will be tasty – the concept is about as compelling as the name.

  2. The food at Tavern on Dean was good, not exceptional, but the atmosphere was outstanding, with a welcome lack of pretentiousness. I only hope the new place can reach the mark in that regard.

I’m not much interested in “celebrity” chefs and dessert-makers. I’m more concerned with our neighborhood gaining a comfortable and reliable local restaurant.

  3. Yeah – food is great, just a little too chaotic for me. I haven’t been able to find a time when they aren’t mobbed. Hopefully this place brings some of the same magic in a more laid back vibe (sheesh, i’m starting to sound old)

  4. This is rather big news. Nate Smith being attached to this means there will be tons of press and the likelihood it will be excellent, is very high.

Sophie from Four and Twenty Blackbirds is going to be making desserts for the place. AWESOME!
