The Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards were handed out by the The New York Landmarks Conservancy in a ceremony at The Natural History Museum on Wednesday night. Only one residential project received a nod this year: Brooklyn Heights-based architect Tom van den Bout was honored for the restoration of 36 Grace Court. At one time covered in a modern metal facade, the house was immaculately restored to original brownstone form between November 2008 and July of 2009. (Kelly Construction was the contractor.) For a look at what the house looked like pre-renovation, check out MyHomeBrooklyn, where the story was originally reported.

  1. Very interesting that the cornice above the entryway extends onto the facade of the neighbors bulding. I wonder if they had to get an easement grant for that. If I was the neighbor I’d just say, damn, go right ahead.

  2. I live on Grace Court. That transformation was amazing. My understanding is that they went back and found the original drawings from the house and restored it. That building used to be a complete eye sore for the block.

  3. It is so refreshing to see such a transformation. When you look at some of these blocks and see the odd “improvements” people have made over the years, it makes me wonder what they were thinking. Thank God for landmarking.
