Henry-Street-vacancies-0308.jpg
The paper has been removed from the windows of these two vacant storefronts on an otherwise-filled Henry Street, between Orange and Pineapple, revealing that the dividing wall has been removed. Neighboring Blue Pig and Busy Chef, both in troubled retail spots, removed their dividing wall not long ago, though it seems Busy Chef is the busiest. Calls to the sales agent were not returned. Does anybody know if this space is being leased as one spacious unit, which could mean a bank, or two? What do you think Henry Street needs? GMAP

  1. SuSu’s Yum Yum was great- When SuSu moved to Columbia Street she also opened up Jake’s the BBQ place across the street. I am not sure if she still owns it but it is still there- I almost ate there last week. As for the BBQ place on Henry in the Cranlyn, that was Pig’n Out. I haven’t found a place that serves better BBQ than they did. If anyone knows, I would love to know who they were and where they might have gone hopefully taking their recipes. I tried to find out by asking around. But, Darn!- The people at the Blue Pig didn’t know anything about their erstwhile Pig neighbors!

For good BBQ these days we enjoy the Lookout Hill Smokehouse in Park Slope (President and 5th) which replaced Biscuit which replaced Night and Day- Dinosaur in West Harlem is good but we sure miss Pig’n Out.

I think the Cranlyn building is still owned by the Sol Goldman estate- They keep changing the size of the street retail units and space is frequently empty with a high turnover.

  2. This is between Cranberry and Orange Streets, not on the next block as wrongly stated. More to the point, the gorgeous art deco ornaments below the windows have been taken out and are likely lost. When the Chinese restaurant took theirs out and threw it away when they were coming in, Landmarks fined them and made them replicate the element (which they did, very poorly). I fervently hope these have been removed for safekeeping by the building’s owners, but I fear for the worst. Another example of the steady loss of architectural beauties by uncaring workers. The facings below the new windows were marble, by the way.

  3. The storefronts have been combined. The rent is $10,000 per month, renovations continue inside, looking in you can see that work has already begun.

Also I have heard that longtime neighborhood coffee shop will be closing it’s doors for good this summer. As they have plans to sell their building.

  4. Su Su opened up a second place on Columbia bet Sackett and Degraw in ’89 or so. Hopefully, she’s retired in Florida by now.

11.30… there is a bar right next door to these shops, although another one wouldn’t hurt.
